The Soul Standard is a production company founded by industry veterans Darryl Dixon & David Watson (Chops Horns), alongside singer/producer Joel Parisien, and executive producer/promoter Daniel Jovkovic. Specializing in funk, soul, jazz, R&B, and dance, their mandate is to push artistic boundaries and connect master craftsmen with fans of new music.
Soul, with its impassioned vocal delivery and relentless groove, has set the standard for popular music since the era of Motown and Stax records, and continues to influence pop, modern rock, hip hop, and EDM. David Watson says: “when you talk about funk, when you talk about R&B, and you talk about soul, you have to realize that the big umbrella is soul, because soul music, to me, is music that comes from the heart.”
Producer Joel Parisien brings a unique perspective to the team. He reminds us that: “back in the day, we didn’t have streaming services like Spotify -- we traded mixtapes. I was an amateur curator of underground music as a teenager, hipping kids to different genres and artists, and DJing parties with a double cassette deck. Sonically, I like to draw from the era of the cassette tape. It’s all unabashedly nostalgic. But, the real alchemy is taking styles of music that, ostensibly, can be classified as retro, and then using those as a foundation to produce something nobody’s ever heard before.”
